Raphael's art sums up the ideals of the Italian High Renaissance more than that of any other artist, even Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Raphael, born Raffaello Santi or Sanzio, lived from 1483 to 1520. When he reached the peak of his artistry about 1510, his work was the clearest expression of the harmony and balance that characterized this style.

Now Washingtonians can see the underlying framework for his paintings in the exhibit "Raphael and His Circle: Drawings From Windsor Castle," which opens tomorrow at the National Gallery of Art. The ...
