The Metropolitan Museum of Art is devoting more attention to one of New York's most popular arts: shopping.

In the face of a two-year slump in sales from its global network of gift shops, the city's most august arts institution has called in a former top executive at Liz Claiborne Inc. to get its merchandise and retail operations back into gear.
