Early paper photographs were--and are--no match for the daguerreotype in recording sheer information. Paper prints, especially calotypes, are inherently pictorial in that light and mass prevail over depicted detail. The clarity of a fine daguerreotype is almost linear. After attempts to etch them for purposes of reproduction largely failed, however, the daguerreotype gradually became obsolete.
