Witch hazel's flowers provide a delight in winter.(Home & Garden)

If witch hazel's dainty flowers opened in spring when crabapples, lilacs and a myriad of other trees and shrubs are in bloom, the shrub wouldn't get much notice. But witch hazels don't wait. Instead, the delicate yellow blossoms with their unusual straplike petals unfurl when the weather is cold and the branches of other woody plants are still bare.
The sight of a vernal witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) in full bloom in late February or early March is a delight not easily forgotten. I can't help but admire the brave little flowers that curl up to protect themselves ...
