Kaneland coaches would not hear sweeter sounds or read more satisfying words if the IHSA sends them that message during the 2000-01 school year.

Kaneland's 1999-2000 enrollment of 770 guarantees it a spot in Class AA for the first time since 1981, when the Knights ended a four-year stint among the state's largest schools.

Boosted by rampant development in District 302, this foray is expected to remain permanent.

With growth there is pain, and if the IHSA would have a little regional-location mercy on the Knights, that pain might be dulled ...
