Introduction

In Queensland, the area disturbed by open-cut coal mining exceeds 50000 ha (Welsh et al. 1994), with much of that area required to be rehabilitated. The first step during mine-site rehabilitation is to design a post-mining landform. Costs for rehabilitation range from $AUS000 to $25 000/ha (Bell et al. 1993), with the most expensive component of the rehabilitation process being re-shaping of overburden spoildumps to create a suitable landform for rehabilitation.
