HANOI _ The greatest general in the history of modern Vietnam learned how to throw a grenade by reading an encyclopedia in the Hanoi public library.

And until Vo Nguyen Giap put together a ragged little communist militia at the age of 33, this military genius and the hero of Dien Bien Phu had never fired anything more exotic than his father's old shotgun during a hunting trip.
