Telefonica invested R$12bil between 1999 and 2001 to provide cable telephone services in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The number of clients increased from 6.3mil in 1998 (when Telesp was privatized) to 9.6mil in December, 1999. Telefonica added 2mil lines last year and predicts to add some more 1.6mil ones this year. Vesper, which competes with Telefonica in Sao Paulo, predicts to offer 550,000 lines during this year.
