The gall bladder needs to be removed if gall stones are causing acute pain in the stomach and shoulder, inducing sweating, vomiting and jaundice.

But only 10 per cent of people with gall stones develop these symptoms and need the op.

Gall stones form by crystallisation from the concentrated bile in the gall bladder when the bile has too much cholesterol.
