MIKHAIL S. GORBACHEV'S drive to open up Soviet society is stirring the Kremlin dead. The Soviet leader's edict that "there should be no blank pages in history and literature' has set in motion the resurrection and reappraisal of such comrades of V.I. Lenin as Leon Trotsky, Nikolai I. Bukharin and Grigory Y. Zinoviev. The most difficult aspect of the process has been clearing the way for an examination of the brutal record of the man who purged those Bolshevik founding fathers and ushered in a long reign of madness and misery--Joseph V. Stalin.
