Could Great Malvern become an inland equivalent of Cornwall's St Ives, England's most beautiful seaside town famous as a haven for artists?

Artist Ian Fearnside, who has just opened a new town centre gallery, sees no reason why the Worcestershire town with a 30,000 population by the Malvern Hills could not be as famous a tourist attraction as St Ives or Hay-on-Wye, the book town by the Herefordshire border.

'They both have about the same population as Malvern,' says Fearnside. 'What we are trying to do is turn Malvern into a real visual arts centre.'
