IN the annals of republican history there is nothing more noble than the glorious failure.

The heroes of rebellion were more valuable in death than in life for only through the blood sacrifice of their doomed revolts could succeeding generations be inspired to pick up the sword of Irish freedom.

Thus it was with Wolfe Tone in 1798 and Robert Emmett in 1803, their failed revolutions lighting the torch for republican heroes as yet unborn. In 1916 that torch set Dublin ablaze and it was from the ashes of the GPO that failure ultimately turned to victory.
