Plants make a wide array of hydrocarbons, some of which are so volatile that large quantities are lost to the atmosphere. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) play a major role in atmospheric chemistry. The fact that plants emit hydrocarbons was used in debates over U.S. policy on air-pollution control when then-presidential candidate Ronald Reagan said "... approximately 80% of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation ..."
