Prince Andrew yesterday pledged a new era of straight talking between the Royal Family and the people.

He signalled that palace aides had assumed too much control in the last 20 years by twisting the truth to avoid giving embarrassing answers.

And he made it clear that from now on genuine inquiries would be honestly met in a bid to get closer to the public.

The prince acknowledged that moves to update the monarchy came directly from the Queen and other royals.

He said: "We're trying to make it better."
