THIS week witnessed the formal publication in Science of the genome (the sequence of DNA "letters" in an organism's chromosomes) of a fruit fly called Drosophila melanogaster--or, at least, of the two-thirds of it, known as the euchromatin, that contains the actual genes. The completion of the Drosophila genome was announced in February at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Science's publisher.
