Leading accountants are calling for a change to the selssessment tax system in the wake of recent figures from the Inland Revenue showing nearly one million forms were not returned by the January 31 deadline.

For many, that will mean fines of pounds 100 and an interest charge of 9.5 per cent on unpaid tax.
