Now a ruin near Islamabad, Taxila was once the very model of a multicultural city, straddling trade routes linking India with Persia and Greece.
Buddha lived there, Alexander the Great conquered it, and there is a strong tradition that Christ came to preach. Its university was one of the most celebrated in the ancient world, teaching more than 60 distinct artistic and scientific disciplines between the 7th century BC and the middle of the 3rd century AD.
