This morning, Dame Ninette de Valois celebrates her 100th birthday. She is, without doubt, one of the greatest women of the century.
With courage, tenacity and supreme organising flair, this remarkable woman created the first British ballet company which led eventually to the creation of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
She has been described as a martinet, a disciplinarian and a tartar.
But more than all this she is a visionary - a combination of Celtic spirit and common sense (in a world not especially renowned for it).
