POET Laureate Ted Hughes, who has died after a battle against cancer, was last night hailed as "one of the great poets of this century".

Hughes, 68, died peacefully at a hospital in London on Wednesday, said his publisher, Faber and Faber.

He had kept his 18-month fight against cancer a secret from all but those very close to him.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and two children from his first marriage to American poet Sylvia Plath.
