Medical research in Birmingham is benefiting from the mysterious legacy of a Midland dignitary who sought to help those who suffered from their involvement in science.

Sir Samuel Hanson Rowbotham's family firm built Birmingham University.

When he died he left the bulk of his wealth to the university, asking it to dispense grants to victims of medical research and their families.

Nobody knows why he chose the cause.
