Boycott's ex-lover 'mad with rage' Cricket legend spurned her and refused to live in France.

Cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott stood side-by-side with the former lover he is charged with assaulting and told a French judge: "I didn't hit her - she was in a rage."

The record-breaking former Yorkshire and England batsman protested his innocence at the beginning of his retrial in Grasse, on the French Riviera.

He was granted the new hearing after he was found guilty last January of punching divorcee Mrs Margaret Moore 20 times in the face.

Boycott told the court yesterday how Mrs Moore, aged 45, had been keen to marry him and to move with him to Monaco.
