POET Laureate Ted Hughes died after a secret 18-month battle against cancer, it was revealed last night.

Only relatives and closest friends knew that Hughes, 68, had been fighting the disease.

And the literary world was stunned by news that he had passed away at a London hospital on Wednesday.

The Yorkshire-born writer, whose landmark poems include Hawk In The Rain and The Crow, was haunted by controversy over the suicide of his first wife Sylvia Plath.
