Tour de France organisers take a huge gamble when the race sets off next week shorn of big names 12 months after one of the most serious doping scandals in history.
The organisers have gambled by excluding riders currently facing doping charges and officials and teams accused of tarnishing the Tour image.
The exclusion of crowd favourite Richard Virenque and the absence of former winners Marco Pantani, Jan Ullrich, Bjarne Riis and prominent riders such as Laurent Jalabert and Franck Vandenbroucke make it a wide open race.
