The high street bakery is doing a roaring trade in pizzas; backpackers have trouble finding a room after 4pm and the evening soccer match on the banks of the mighty Mekong has become an international affair.

This is the ancient town of Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos, and a star attraction as one of Asia's poorest nations bids to lift tourist arrivals during its two-year "Visit Laos" campaign that started in November.
