The famous writer would wander around the picturesque Warwickshire village of Alveston in his wide-brimmed hat smoking a pipe without being very friendly to the locals.

But Dr Michael Coigley recalls the late J B Priestley (1894-1984) In a different light as an interesting conversationalist who was enjoyable company.

"I think he thought people would bother him because of who he was if he stopped to talk," recalls Dr Coigley, who was the writer's GP during the final 24 years of his life living in the village just a few miles from Stratford-upon-Avon.
