The closure of progressive Summerhill School, where attendance at lessons is optional, would be an "act of educational vandalism", a tribunal heard yesterday.

Mr Geoffrey Robertson QC said the freedom exercised by the Suffolk school's 59 pupils whether to go into the classroom was not negotiable.
