Q I have about six years to go until I retire and am looking to invest a lump sum. I already have a PEP and a TESSA and being a higher rate tax payer, I don't want to have any tax bills. Can you suggest any low risk investments that might suit?

A One option might be the National Savings certificates which are tax-free, but the rates for these aren't all that attractive. The Index linked issue is only giving 1.65 per cent above inflation which doesn't allow for much capital growth, and the five-year fixed rate is only 3.25 per cent gross.
