ST John Ambulance is this year celebrating a very special anniversary - its 900th birthday. But the historic care organisation, which has been providing First Aid for nine centuries, is now itself in urgent need of help.

On the eve of a new Millennium, the charity faces an uncertain future unless it can raise pounds 20 million and attract new volunteers.

For the organisation that everybody knows, but few really appreciate, it is a troubled time.
