Otto von Bismarck achieved the seemingly impossible. The 1871 unification of Germany is but the most noteworthy of his accomplishments. But, he also initiated and lost significant battles. Among these, the Kulturkampf (church-state conflict, 1871-87) and the anti-socialist measures stand out. Ronald Ross systematically examines the failure of the former.
