Merce Rodoreda's La placa del Diamant presents challenges in establishing the relationships between the historical context and the construction of female subjectivity. Some motifs previously ignored by critics, such as the myth of Sodom as a paradigmatic of the act of looking back and the gesture inaugurating both historical enquiry and compulsory heterosexuality, are considered.
