Feb. 29--LINCOLN, Neb.--Yielding to pressure from many of the nation's small pork producers, Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman called Monday for a national vote on whether to continue a 12-year program that taxes farmers to fund marketing efforts.
Glickman said pork producers deserve a chance to vote on the mandatory checkoff -- a 45-cent fee for every $100 worth of pork that producers sell -- even if he couldn't be certain that a petition campaign had enough valid signatures to force a vote.
