Cannon House Office Building damaged in fire.(Metropolitan)(District)

A second-floor blaze at the Cannon House Office Building last night next to the House Budget Committee's conference area left several first-floor offices with significant water damage, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

"At 8 p.m., an officer on patrol in the interior of the building noticed the strong smell of smoke coming from room 209," said Capitol Police Spokesman Lt. Dan Nichols.

Firefighters brought half a dozen trucks to the scene and contained the blaze about 10 minutes later, D.C. Fire Department spokesman Capt. Brian Lee said.
