Rome's mayor defends plan to host gay pride gathering
After the Rome city council allocated about $200,000 for World Pride 2000, a July 1-8 international meeting of gays and lesbians, a Vatican source said the Vatican would not intervene formally with the government to stop the gathering.
However, a city official who asked not to be named said the Vatican had made clear its disapproval of the city hosting the gathering during the Holy Year.
