Afro-Caribbean music is antiphonal music, characterized by its call and response pattern. In this style of singing there is a soloist who introduces the central theme of the tune and a chorus that answers him with a repeated refrain.

These singers are direct descendants of Spanish trovadores and cantaores (singers) who engaged in a dialogue with their audience as they improvised their songs.
