Japanese researchers have developed a ceramic-based composite that kills bacteria and fungi, and degrades other organic matter.

Researchers at the National Industrial Research Institute in Nagoya make the composite from fine particles of titanium oxide, which are surface-coated with microscopic beads of apatite. To do so, they add powdered titanium oxide to water containing sodium, phosphorous and calcium salts, and then heat the mixture to 37-40oC for about 24 hours. <...
