Air Force Academy Cuts 34 Health-Care Workers.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Feb. 19--A plan to cut positions at the Air Force Academy hospital has drawn fire from Rep. Joel Hefley.

Hefley, R-Colo., met with the Air Force chief of staff and surgeon general and on Friday planned to send a letter to Air Force Secretary F. Whitten Peters on the matter.

The academy is in the midst of cutting 34 health-care workers as it tries to save money by running more like a civilian operation. The last cuts will come in September when two doctors, three physician assistants and a paramedic -- all civilians -- are set to go.
