Feb. 11--After metal shavings were found in the horizontal stabilizer assemblies of two Alaska Airlines jets still in service, federal officials announced Thursday that all McDonnell Douglas DC-9s and MD-80s must be inspected.

The Federal Aviation Administration was expected to issue a formal airworthiness directive early Friday giving airlines three days to inspect the mechanism that operates the horizontal stabilizers on more than 1,100 U.S.-registered airplanes.
