In an homage to Czeslaw Milosz, the American Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky called him "an essential American poet-perhaps even the most important living American poet" (PR, 145). He went on to point out the unusual popularity of Milosz's poetry among young students: "When I ask them to choose a poem to learn by heart, it is often a poem by Czeslaw Milosz, in translation."
