Feb. 8--Aviation experts call the MD-80 one of the safest planes in the sky. But the Alaska Airlines crash, two subsequent unscheduled landings and an inspection order from federal regulators are calling the safety of the aircraft into question.

In May, the Federal Aviation Administration gave all carriers 18 months to check for corrosion of the lug bores and surface of the hinge plate that hold the MD-80's vertical-to-horizontal stabilizer in place.
