Dean & DeLuca has hired a former top-level executive with Starbucks Coffee Co. to lead a major national expansion effort and plan a possible initial public offering by the end of this year.

"This is a brand that is larger than life," says John Richards, who was Starbucks' president of North American operations for the past two years. "I want to see it achieve its full potential."
