Colorado Air Force Academy Cuts Health Care Workers to Save Money.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 29--The Air Force Academy is in the midst of cutting 34 health care workers, as military medicine tries to save money by running more like civilian outfits.

The latest move will come in September when two doctors, three physician assistants and a paramedic -- all civilians -- are set to go.

This is the second phase of cuts for the academy hospital and the clinic at Peterson Air Force Base, which are grouped together. Some 35 jobs were eliminated when the bases merged operations in 1998 as the 10th Medical Group. It now has 1,022 people.
