TUCKED away in a little university art gallery in the north-east of England (the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle-upon-Tyne) is one of the least known masterpieces of 20th century art. This bizarrely beautiful work, the Merzbarn relief, is by the German artist, Kurt Schwitters, born in Hanover in 1887 and one of the great figures of the European avant- garde between the two world wars.
