Men, women, children, politicians, clergymen and other Washingtonians rode out of town on Sunday morning to the hills around Bull Run Creek. It was July 21, 1861. Carriages rumbled over the dusty Virginia roads as their drivers sought to secure a good view of the coming battle.
The spectators spread blankets and the contents of picnic baskets on the hillsides to watch the battle unfold - unknowingly putting themselves in harm's way and impeding the wildly disorganized retreat of the Union forces a few hours later.
