WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - As was the practice 200 years ago, the town crier stands on a cobblestone street corner. His simple dress of dark, knee-length pants; matching knee stockings; white, long-sleeved, cotton shirt; and beige cotton vest are indicative of the era he represents.

"Three o'clock and all's well," he bellows to passing tourists eager to enter the restored shops, gardens and buildings on streets little changed for centuries.

The crier re-enacts his role just as the coopers, silversmiths, bakers, weavers and all the costumed interpreters do.
