My little pal Joe Grady and I, all of 14 both of us, went rocketing up the stairs of my Aunt Kitty's house. "Grady?" asked my Aunt Kitty jovially. "I'm an Irishman myself, Joe. Have a drink!"
Now this puzzled me. Joe was too young to drink, as my Aunt Kitty surely knew, and he refused the drink politely. But what puzzled me more was this: Since when was my Aunt Kitty an Irishman? Her maiden name was Hurley, I knew, but I'd always thought she was an American just like Joe and me. I had a French name. Did that make me a Frenchman? My pal Joe was an ...
