Patients at risk for suicide can be helped dramatically with lithium, one of the oldest psychiatric drugs, a new report shows.
Researchers have long recognized that lithium could help stabilize mental disorders, especially the wild mood swings associated with manic depression.
But a new report concludes that, on average, lithium treatments also reduce the risk of suicide by at least sixfold. The report reviewed 28 previous studies done between 1974 and 1996 involving 17,000 patients.
