If style is content, as playwright Suzan-Lori Parks argues in one of her recent essays, then her "Venus," now at the Studio Theatre's SecondStage , is a sarcastic freak show and bleak melodrama.

A dour character called the Negro Resurrectionist (stern-sounding Eric Jao) reads historical footnotes and flips title cards as he announces the 31 scenes, which proceed backward numerically, though they move forward chronologically. The black-clad chorus of eight actors quickly unveils the main attraction: the Venus Hottentot, an African woman exhibited in a makeshift cage ...
