Dec. 14 -- The California Labor Commissioner has fined three Bay Area electronics companies $185,000 for not paying workers adequately.
The fines and the lawsuit are the first concrete results of a wider investigation of Silicon Valley companies believed to be paying workers by the piece instead of by the hour, which often turns out be lower than minimum wage.
