ZANZIBAR
WHETHER on T-shirts, calendars or magazines, the face of Julius Nyerere is all over Tanzania. People still talk of the mwalimu (teacher), who died back in October, with deep affection. But there is also a hint of relief: the old man is gone, so now is the time for the new.
In fact, Nyerere stepped down as Tanzania's president 15 years ago and watched as the country abandoned his ideas of African socialism, and held its first multi-party elections in 1995. The country's second such set of elections, presidential and parliamentary, will be held next October. No ...
