Western leaders on Tuesday loudly condemned Russia's ultimatum to the Chechens still in Grozny to leave by Saturday or face death, while China and Kazakhstan stood by Moscow.
In London, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook accused Russia of ``breaking basic humanitarian norms'' and demanded that Moscow rescind the ultimatum and extend the deadline for Grozny's evacuation.
Cook, addressing the House of Commons, the lower chamber of Parliament, said, ``I wholeheartedly condemn (Monday's) ultimatum to the residents of Grozny to flee or be destroyed.''
